Welcome to BIOL 1114!

This semester you have the choice of purchasing an electronic version (e-book) of the textbook, produced by VitalSource for McGraw-Hill, or a traditional paper one.  We are recommending that you consider the e-book, especially if you have a laptop computer. The e-book is very powerful and offers some outstanding features. It has the same contents as the hardcopy version (narrative, images, end-of-chapter questions), and downloads to your computer so you do not have to be online to access the majority of features. The e-book also includes animations, instructional movies and simulations that will require you to be connected to the internet to access. It is totally searchable. You enter a word or phrase and you receive a list of links where the word or phrase has been found in the textbook. You can highlight and attach notes to words, pictures, a phrase, or even a letter anywhere in the textbook. This is a very powerful way to personalize your e-book. If you have two computers, it will synchronize the notes between them.  If you want to share your highlights and notes with friends, you can synchronize them too.  You can highlight in multiple colors, find all of those highlights and erase or change the notes or highlights.  Better yet, if we do say so, you can receive the notes that we put in the e-book for you!! You can subscribe to the instructor’s notes so when you are connected to the Internet you will receive any update of notes that we have added. If you have the electronic book, the Required Readings links on the BIOL 1114 website will take you directly to the pages listed. In addition the e-book costs about half the price of a new textbook? If you are taking Chem 1314, there is a VitalSource e-book for that course too – so one laptop can replace carrying two heavy textbooks.

Now the downside:

When you purchase the e-book you receive a code that will allow you to download the e-book to up to two computers. Save one download in case your computer crashes or has problems.
